STEAM Forward US Inc. DBA Hackground (EIN – 47-2084581) is 501 (3) (C) non profit supporting community based STE(A)M activities, with a mission to provide and organize programs for students from Kindergarten all the way through high school.

What is STE(A)M ?

STE(A)M fields is an acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The initiative began to include arts and design in STEM fields education.

STEM programs are designed to integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the classroom. These programs aim to teach students to think critically and have an engineering or design approach towards real-world problems while building on their math and science base. STEAM programs add art to STEM curriculum by drawing on design principles and encouraging creative solutions.

Along with providing STE(A)M related classes we also organize and run all the four (FLL Jr., FLL, FTC, FRC)  FIRST robotics programs.

Why the name HACKGROUND ?

The name Hackground was derived from the combination of a concept of providing a technology playground similar to a Hacker Space for students.  According to Wikipedia a  hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklabmakerspace or hackspace) is a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in computers, machining, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialize and collaborate.

History

In 2010, the founding director of Hackground, Prasad Karunakaran and his wife started a First Lego League (FLL)  and  First Lego League Jr. (FLL Jr.) team out of their basement to introduce their children to Robotics.  By the end of 2013, that one FLL team grew to 4 teams and was becoming difficult to run out of their basement.  So during the summer of 2014 Prasad reached out to Greenebaum Enterprises one of the developers/promoters of the Maple lawn community for the possibility of providing some space in their commercial building to run more FLL teams.  Without any hesitation they obliged to the request and by November 2014, Hackground was officially formed as a non profit and started operating out of 8171 Maple lawn blvd.   Hackground has been able to grow much faster since and provide more and more programs for the students in the community.

Testimonials

My daughter (12) had a great time at the camp, she built her own robot, learned how to solder and some basic electronics, learned how to program in Arduino and Lego Robotics, and said the most fun was controlling the robot and the robot battle. The only downside is that I suspect we're going to be buying a lot more robotics gear now since she wants to pursue it further at home. Thanks Mr. Garner!!!

5/5 stars from my son who took the EV3 Programming Class at Hackground. This was his first exposure to EV3 and he loved every class and was disappointed it ended. He learned a lot and is looking forward to being a programmer on his FLL team next Fall. Prasad also answered all my questions about FLL as we are new comers. He has a wealth of information to share and a passion for Robotics which is evident in all he does. We are hopeful my son can take another class from him in the future!
